This procedure is almost always done laparoscopically through five small incisions in the abdomen. Laparoscopic surgery usually results in a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, smaller scars, and less pain than open surgical procedures. The surgical procedure takes 1.5-2.5 hours with approximately 1-2 hours in the recovery room following surgery. The gastric bypass procedure does require a minimum of 2 nights in the hospital. The first day after surgery, we may get a swallow study with x-rays to make sure everything looks good. The bariatric staff at Rose Medical Center are excellent and have helped take care of thousands of bariatric patients.
