How Does the LAP-BAND System Work?

Published on January 31, 2019

The LAP-BAND system has proven to be a highly effective tool in the fight against obesity. The LAP-BAND has helped countless individuals on their journey to living healthier lives since it was first approved by the FDA back in 2001.

The LAP-BAND adjustable gastric-banding system revolutionized weight-loss systems by being the first adjustable system available. It is also credited with being the least traumatic option for weight-loss surgery.

Unlike other surgical weight-loss options which involve excising and stapling portions of the stomach, the LAP-BAND works by using a special silicone band to essentially decrease the size of the stomach. The silicone band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach and is filled with saline to inflate it. The amount of saline in the band can be increased or decreased.

If you are interested in using the LAP-BAND to help you lose weight, contact Western Surgical Bariatric Center today to schedule a consultation with fellowship-trained bariatric surgeon Dr. John Weaver. He can go over your options for bariatric surgery and let you know if the LAP-BAND is your best option.
