At Western Surgical Bariatric Center, we offer multiple options for weight-loss surgery. We understand that it can be difficult to know which procedure is right for you. That is why we perform a thorough medical evaluation. We take time to understand why our patients are considering weight-loss surgery and what they are trying to achieve with the procedure.
One of the most important factors when it comes to choosing the right weight-loss procedure is the BMI of the patient. Patients with a low BMI (between 30 and 35) can benefit from procedures like the LAP-BAND and gastric balloon. These are less invasive and less traumatic options that still produce excellent results.
Gastric sleeve surgery and gastric bypass surgery are significantly more traumatic on the body but are designed to produce more dramatic results than options like the gastric balloon. Both of these procedures involve the surgical reduction of the stomach using staples. These options are highly effective and better suited for patients with a high BMI.
Fellowship-trained bariatric surgeon Dr. John Weaver emphasizes the importance of educating our patients so that they can be fully prepared for their procedure. By the end of their consultation, they should understand what changes they will need to make after their procedure to ensure their health and safety.
